The world around us is increasingly being shaped by scripts and the act of writing letters and numbers: Knowledge is being negotiated on the basis of written texts. Algorithmic formulas made up of ones and zeros can initiate actions. Among the results of these technological developments are the ability of machines to now “learn” linguistic operations, and the emergence of new forms of interaction between man and machine.
Through our curatorial program, we want to explore how new literacy can be further related to artistic practice, in trying to think of an adequate approach conceived from the digital plenty. What would be possible scenarios? Writing in code, finding diverse practices on how to use new alphabet, creating fictional characters that are able to adapt to new understanding of the world or critically examining what is new literacy after all?
Consequently we have invited the artists, philosophers, scientists, cultural theorists and musicians, to be part of Kulturfolgers yearly programme for 2019 “Alphabets” in order to present their own specific interpretations of these new processes of digital literacy in art, performance, music, and discourse in a range of highly diverse formats. They will through their practice push the boundaries of what is or what alphabet can be - understanding it on a level of letters, numbers, atoms and sound.
